In the first half of 2024, the largest percentage decrease was recorded in butcher shops, and the number of off-licences and greengrocers also dropped – reports “Puls Biznesu” citing data from Dun & Bradstreet Poland. The exception are bakeries, the number of which increased.
According to the newspaper, in the first half of the year, a total of over half a thousand grocery stores.
More and more shops are closing in Poland
The biggest number of butcher shops disappeared, with their number dropping by 1.3% to just over 8.5 thousand. There are currently 4.8 thousand off-licences in Poland, down 0.7% from last year, and 7.4 thousand greengrocers, down 0.2%. The number of fish shops has not changed, with 1.2 thousand still operating.
As “Puls Biznesu” notes, a unique phenomenon are bakeries and confectionery shops, of which there are 3.2 thousand, i.e. 0.9 percent more. – Poles no longer want the cheapest bread from the hypermarket, they want to eat bread that is not only tasty, but also baked from good quality products – says Tomasz Starzyk, spokesman for Dun & Bradstreet Poland.
According to him, in the next three years, the number of specialist fish shops and those offering fruit and vegetables will also start to grow, and I don't mean organic shops, but traditional ones. – Of course, for this trend to strengthen, it is necessary to improve the economic situation of Polish society – adds Starzyk.
