Activists from the association “Kamień i co?” applied for the entry of the railway “tower” into the register of immovable monuments. There is a response from the conservator.

It is about a unique, maybe not in the scale of the whole country (there are four of them), but certainly in the scale of Warsaw – the only reinforced concrete coal bunker in the capital (commonly called the tower), used mainly for coaling steam locomotives. It is located in Odolany.

“Waiting for development idea”

“Reinforced concrete elements of the bunker, just after the war, underwent a transatlantic journey as part of the United States’ aid for rebuilding Poland. The technology, not very well known in Poland at that time, caused a lot of difficulties to the team that assembled this huge structure (earlier, two teams had given up without completing the order)” – explain the social activists, adding that while the assembly of the tower itself was not a major problem, it was the assembly of the conveyor belt.

The mechanism, together with a conveyor belt, a crane, a shed and an underground chamber, was used to fill wagons not only with coal, but also with sand, gravel, coke, and significantly accelerated the loading process, thanks to which goods could be transported faster.

“Currently, the facility is located in the vicinity of disused railway sidings and, devoid of many technical elements, it is waiting for an idea for its development – maybe some railway open-air museum? Maybe the nearby Museum Station?” – social activists wonder.

MWKZ spokesman Andrzej Mizera said that such a request had actually been received and the conservator “has already started the registration procedure”.
