Representatives of opposition parties, local governments and social organizations signed an agreement on Civic Election Control on Friday. Its purpose is to counteract possible electoral irregularities. PO leader Donald Tusk assessed it as “indispensable”.

The agreement was signed on the initiative of the Committee for the Defense of Democracy, under the patronage of former presidents: Lech Wałęsa, Aleksander Kwaśniewski and Bronisław Komorowski. It concerns joint activities, including the recruitment and coordination of the staffing of election commissions: committee members, social observers and stewards, observation and control of the election process, systemic reporting of election results and potential irregularities.

The head of the Civic Platform, Donald Tusk, pointed out at the ceremony that civic control of the elections was necessary, especially – as he argued – after the last presidential election. According to him, although these were free elections, they were not fair. – The abuse of power, the use of public funds, the full monopolization of state media in favor of one candidate made these elections – to put it mildly – biased, said the head of the PO.

– What we fear and have reasons to fear is the possibility of manipulating or even rigging elections, also at the lowest level – said the leader of the Civic Platform, thanking everyone involved in civic control of the elections.
