This coming Sunday, the parishes of the Archdiocese of Warsaw will organize a fundraiser to help refugees from Afghanistan. The decision was made by the Metropolitan of Warsaw, Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz. At his call, the intentions of the refugees are to be added to the prayers of the faithful on Sunday liturgies.
The press office of the Archdiocese of Warsaw informed about the decision of Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz on Monday. The message sent to the Polish Press Agency indicated that parishes would join the work of helping refugees from Afghanistan. “In view of the difficult situation in Afghanistan and the large number of refugees, Caritas Polska is organizing specific assistance for the victims staying in our country” – it was reported.
The auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Warsaw, Michał Janocha, instructed that the collection of funds for the cans should be carried out after the Holy Masses on Sunday, September 5, 2021. The parish priests were also asked to include a summons for the refugees in the prayer of the faithful “The collected material should be paid immediately to the curial fund or sent to the account of the Archdiocese of Warsaw “- he wrote in a press release.
Day of Solidarity with the Afghans
The chairman of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, issued a special appeal on August 27in which he announced the “Day of Afghanistan Solidarity” pointing to the date September 5.
“Listening to the voice of Pope Francis, who called all people of good will to ‘pray to the God of peace, that the jaws of arms would fall silent and that solutions could be found at the table of dialogue’, I appeal to the shepherds and the faithful of the Church in Poland for prayer and material help for the suffering people of Afghanistan “, wrote Archbishop Gądecki in an appeal to PAP.
He called on Sunday, September 5, to ask God for peace in Afghanistan and for Afghans during the common prayer in every church and chapel in Poland, and to organize a fundraiser for them after the Holy Masses. “The collected funds will be allocated to long-term support for Caritas’ activities for migrants and refugees, both in Poland and abroad” – announced the chairman of the KEP.
He also announced that in cooperation with Caritas in Pakistan, a three-month humanitarian intervention of immediate aid for approximately 1,500 families will begin. He also pointed out that there are already Migrant and Refugee Centers in Poland run by Caritas Polska and diocesan Caritas.
“Caritas Polska will launch a nationwide program of support for refugees in our homeland – from spiritual, psychological and social assistance, through linguistic, legal and medical assistance, to professional counseling, intercultural support and support for parish volunteering and communication with the media” – we read in the appeal.
Caritas collection for refugees from Afghanistan
Caritas Polska has launched a special fundraiser to help refugees from Afghanistan. The collected funds will be used to support Caritas activities in Pakistan and Iran and for the needs of refugees already staying in Poland.
The campaign can be supported via the website caritas.pl/afganistan by making a payment to the account 77 1160 2202 0000 0000 3436 4384 (payment title: Afghanistan) or by sending a text message AFGANISTAN to the number 72052 (cost PLN 2.46).
