Philharmonic Hall Karol Szymanowski in Krakow is facing a facelift – not only the location, but also the name will be changed. After the move, the institution will probably use the name MaƂopolska Philharmonic.

On Thursday, the board of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship appointed a team for the creation of a new headquarters for the philharmonic hall. Its chairman was Iwona Gibas, a member of the voivodeship board, and its members included, among others, voivodeship councilor and former education superintendent Barbara Nowak, employees of the marshal's office, director of the Krakow Philharmonic Mateusz Prendota, former rector of the Jagiellonian University Jacek Popiel, former rector of the Academy of Music in Krakow Wojciech WidƂak, rector Pontifical University Fr. Robert TyraƂa, director of the Robert Piaskowski National Cultural Center.

According to the Polish Press Agency, a change of the institution's name is also planned. The “MaƂopolska Philharmonic” would be a good fit – according to information obtained by PAP from the Marshal's Office – especially if the new headquarters of the philharmonic were located outside Krakow. The name would refer to a larger region than just the city, such as the names of such philharmonic halls as Silesia, Lower Silesia, Pomerania, ƚwiętokrzyska.

According to the Marshal of MaƂopolska, Ɓukasz SmóƂka, the establishment of the group is a breakthrough moment for the creation of the new seat of the Philharmonic. Karol Szymanowski in Krakow. The team will first focus on finding a location for the philharmonic hall. According to the Marshal, properties belonging to the voivodeship will be taken into account first, e.g. around the Grzegórzeckie roundabout. However, it is possible that the institution would be based outside Krakow.

The commencement of construction of the new headquarters of the philharmonic hall is one of the strategic investments of the voivodeship. The Marshal wants the 2025 budget to include funds for the investment. – This task will be difficult. My goal is not to build a philharmonic hall in the next five years, but to break ground on this facility within five years, or at the end of the term, said SmóƂka. The estimated cost of building the headquarters is PLN 400 million.

The building was rented from the curia

Philharmonic Hall Karola Szymanowskiego in Krakow, since 1945, has been located at the intersection of Zwierzyniecka and Straszewskiego streets in the very center of the city. The building is rented from the Archdiocese of Krakow, currently the monthly rent is – as the philharmonic employees say – a symbolic PLN 15,000. zloty.

Representatives of the artistic community want a new headquarters for the philharmonic not only because of the lack of ownership rights to the property currently occupied, but primarily to ensure that the sound quality during concerts is better than in the current building, which was not built for the philharmonic. Musicians and guests have often complained about the noise of nearby trams.
