The man suspected of attacking Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is Polish and at the time of the incident he was allegedly under the influence of drugs and alcohol – confirmed Paweł Wroński, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This information was previously reported by the Danish media.

The attack took place on Friday evening on Kultorvet square in the center of the Danish capital. The prosecutor's office found that the 39-year-old perpetrator had attacked a person performing a public function by using violence and the threat of violence. The man punched the Prime Minister in the right shoulder, causing her to lose her balance.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister's office Denmark reported that Frederiksen suffered a slight cervical spine injury.

The Danish police wrote on the X platform that a political motive was not taken into account. According to the court, the man knew who Frederiksen was when he attacked her.

According to Danish media, including the “Jyllands-Posten” newspaper, the suspect is Polish and has been in Denmark since 2019. The Danish public broadcaster DR quotes the opinion of a doctor read in court, who stated that the man was mentally unstable and under the influence of alcohol and drugs during his detention.

The reports that the detained person was Polish and was under the influence of drugs and alcohol were confirmed by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Paweł Wroński, in an interview with the Polish Press Agency.

Witness accounts

Two women who saw the attack on the prime minister told Copenhagen's BT newspaper what the incident was like. – We were sitting by the fountain and we recognized that Prime Minister Frederiksen was walking there. Suddenly, a man approached from the opposite side, grabbed her arm and pushed her forcefully, causing her to fall on her side, they said.

– She looked at the attacker, she looked shocked and offended. She also said something to the man she was walking with. Later, she entered a local cafe and sat down at one of the tables, they reported.
