The preparation full of “friendly” strains of mushrooms will protect strawberries and raspberries

Scientists have found “friendly” strains of fungus in soils where wild raspberries, naturally resistant to some diseases, grew. Now a team of researchers has developed a blend of mushrooms and supplements to help growers protect their raspberries and strawberries.

Scientists from the team of Professor Magdalena Frąc (Institute of Agrophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Lublin) decided to focus on four types of pathogens that are a nuisance for raspberry growers. Mushrooms of the genus Botrytis cause gray mold in raspberries and strawberries, Colletotrichum – fruit anthracnose (this is manifested, among other things, by the formation of black spots), a Verticillium and fungus-like organisms of the genus Phytophthora they attack the root of the seedling and then destroy the plant. Researchers were looking for natural allies of raspberries – soil microorganisms that will inhabit the ecological niche into which pathogens enter. The assumption was in short: if the soil is inhabited by “friendly” fungi, there will be no room for the development of other pathogenic fungi, and the plant will be supported in defense against pathogens. – We cooperated with forest inspectorates, which helped us to select places with natural raspberry habitats. We meant wild raspberries that develop healthily, despite the fact that they are not fertilized or sprayed. So they have a natural disease resistance. We traveled to many places – from the Lubelskie, Mazowieckie, Kuyavian-Pomeranian and other regions of Poland. We took samples, characterized the habitats, collected and marked the microbiome from the rhizosphere, i.e. the zone near the roots – said Professor Frąc.

The mixture is to help growers protect raspberries and strawberries

The scientists tested about 200 strains of mushrooms. Among them, those that would be the most effective in combating pathogens and would be safe for humans, plants and the environment were sought. And so, in the preparation developed by Poles, there are 11 strains of fungi of the genus Trichoderma (this type is a source of strains effective in supporting the growth and biological protection of plants). These strains have been selected so that they do not compete with each other and can coexist peacefully with each other. In addition to fungal spores, the preparation also contains a properly prepared supplementary mixture that will facilitate the rapid development of selected fungi, but will not be conducive to the development of phytopathogenic fungi. – We developed two formulations. One is poured under the roots of seedlings in newly established plantations, and the other can be dissolved in water and used as a spray on the leaves or at the root for naturalization watering – explained Prof. Froc. – Under controlled conditions, we assessed how the preparation would affect the development of plants. We showed that in the case of the gray mold pathogen, unnaturalized control plants died. When watering with the preparation or a combined naturalization strategy of plant and root inoculation was used – the plants coped with the pathogen and developed normally – she added. – The patent application describes the method of producing the biopreparation. So we know exactly how to grow these wild mushroom strains, process them and stimulate their development, noted the researcher.
