Mexican President Manuel Obrador met with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris while in Washington. The main topic of the talks was the problem of illegal migration. Mexican media comment on the results of the visit that ended on Wednesday. The press brings to the fore Biden’s promise to invest $ 40 billion in Mexico to create jobs.
As Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard informed journalists, American companies are to make a Mexico these investments by the end of 2024. At the same time, in a joint declaration, the governments of both countries committed to “taking immediate and coordinated measures to control the influx of migrants that reach our countries.”
From the beginning of 2021, i.e. from the assumption of the position of the US president by Joe Biden US authorities detained 2.8 million migrants illegally trying to enter the US at the Mexican-US border.
On the initiative of Biden from the beginning of his tenure United States spent $ 3.4 billion sealing the borders with Mexico and Canada. During the talks between the two presidents, Mexico promised to spend 1.5 billion dollars for the same purpose in 2022-2024.
The problem of illegal labor emigration to the USA was the most difficult topic of talks also with the participation of Vice President Kamala Harris. Day and night, thousands of people from the Central American countries plagued by unemployment as they try to cross the southern border of the USA continue their journey. Their number exceeds 200,000 each month.
This migration is accompanied by large-scale smuggling of weapons and drugs. This problem was also one of the main topics of talks between the US and Mexican presidents.
Joint announcement of the presidents. “It is important to act together”
The joint communiqué stressed that both sides are “taking immediate and concerted steps to manage an unprecedentedly large number of flows of migrants in line with the agreement on this issue at the recent Los Angeles Summit of the Americas.”
The President of Mexico did not attend this summit. The reason he mentioned was the fact that the organizers did not take into account his suggestions that the presidents of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua should also be invited to the summit. Nevertheless, Lopez Obrador agreed, as confirmed by the official communiqué from his talks with the US president, that Mexico should participate in financing the costs of sealing the border with the United States.
Despite “some disagreements between the two presidents,” as reported by the Mexican media in the reports of Lopez Obrador’s visit, he assured Joe Biden that “in the troubled times we live in, with the suffering caused by the pandemic, war in Ukraine and the deepening economic and inflationary crisis, we must act together. “
However, US aid to Ukraine in the war with Russia was previously classified by the President of Mexico as a “mistake” and criticized the US for placing Kiev’s financing ahead of Central America’s economic aid.
