I am deeply shocked that people who are crystal clear were put in prison – says President Andrzej Duda after the detention of Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik. However, the president did not say in his statement whether he would pardon PiS politicians, although he may do so.

On Wednesday, President Andrzej Duda made a statement about the convicted Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik. He said he was “deeply shocked by this situation” and politicians were crystal honest. – I will not rest until Minister Mariusz Kamiński and his colleagues are free people again. I will not rest, I assure you of that, I will not be afraid, said the president.

Such solemn assurances are not needed. All you need to do is pardon both men again and they will be released, the government points out. – Undoubtedly (pardon – ed.) it would result in immediate release from serving the sentence – points out Dariusz Mazur, Deputy Minister of Justice.

Instead, the president first received convicts wanted by the police at the Presidential Palace, and now he does not want to issue a new law of mercy, which no one would question after the final verdict. Andrzej Duda stubbornly claims that he has already successfully pardoned them. – Apparently, the president is not that attached to Messrs. Wąsik and Kamiński – comments Bogdan Klich, senator of the Civic Coalition.

– He will change his decision in a few days – we hear in the Sejm. – I think that in two, three, four, five days Andrzej Duda will come out and say that he analyzed, verified and checked – predicts Tomasz Trela, an MP from the Left.

PiS talks about “regime actions”

Mariusz Kamiński – as we read in the statement – went on a protest hunger strike, and his supporters established the Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners. PiS adds that it is a defense committee against Tusk’s regime. – These are regime actions – emphasizes Agnieszka Wojciechowska van Heukelom, an MP from Law and Justice.

– It’s all a spectacle of lies and disinformation – replies the new majority. – The meaning of concepts such as freedom and democracy is being reversed – emphasizes Senator Klich.

As we hear, PiS wants to mobilize its supporters for protests in this way. – The president is calling for calm, but this is just a political game – says the authorities and reminds that Andrzej Duda is the one who holds the pardon. – The president has the right to do this – points out Michał Kamiński, deputy speaker of the Senate from Third Way.

Mariusz Kamiński demands the dismissal of himself and other members of the former CBA management. He writes that he is a political prisoner convicted for fighting corruption and this is political revenge. – He has the right not to eat or drink, this is an individual decision – comments Maria Ejchart, deputy minister of justice, on Kamiński’s hunger strike.

The Ministry of Justice assures that Kamiński will be monitored and, if necessary, he will be taken to hospital. At the same time, he adds that the convicted politician is not a political prisoner. – The fact that a politician is in prison does not mean that he is a political prisoner – emphasizes Ejchart.

Behind the scenes of the case

The judgment in the case of Kamiński and Wąsik concerned the illegal forging of administrative documents – resolutions, letters, applications, seals and signatures of as many as six people and officials, as well as illegal wiretapping. A fictitious situation was created to provoke corruption in the clearing of land in Masuria. – There were four hundred pages of justification in the first instance. This is a case examined very carefully by the courts of both instances, assures Dariusz Mazur, Deputy Minister of Justice.

The entire operation in 2007 was aimed at eliminating Andrzej Lepper from politics. Lepper did not take the bribe, but the government fell and early elections were held.

However, PiS claims that the law is being broken now. – We are dealing with a coup d’état – says Ryszard Terlecki, an MP from Law and Justice. At the same time, Jarosław Kaczyński’s party suggests that Sejm sessions without both politicians may be illegal. Politicians also appear at the detention center where the convicts are held. There are attempts to discuss this with the facility’s management.

Kamiński and Wąsik are in so-called transitional cells. The convict is waiting there for a decision on where he will serve his sentence. – He meets with a tutor, may meet with a psychologist, and undergoes necessary sanitary procedures – explains Ejchart.
