The 13-year-old was riding a quad on dirt roads. At one point, the engine stalled and wouldn’t start. As the boy was pushing the vehicle, it started and drove off without a driver. A four-wheeler hit a pedestrian, who was taken to the hospital.

A quad or a moped are very popular vehicles, willingly given to children as gifts for various occasions. As the police point out, buying this expensive gift should require more thought from parents.

– Parents, however, do not realize how much danger such vehicles used by children can pose. They buy them even for a few-year-olds, not paying attention to the lack of permissions or a protective helmet. Some even “remove” speed blocks from this type of vehicles – says Kom. Kinga Drężek-Zmysłowska, press officer of the police in Płońsk.

A runaway quad

A dangerous event took place at the end of last week in Stare Wypych (Somianka commune).

According to the preliminary findings of traffic police officers, a 13-year-old resident of the Wyszków district was riding a quad on a dirt road. At some point, the vehicle’s engine died and would not start. The boy, trying to start the equipment, engaged the gear and began to push it. Suddenly the quad started up and started to drive away.

– The 13-year-old failed to catch up and get on the vehicle. After driving about 300 meters, the four-wheeler hit a 40-year-old pedestrian and, moving with a woman, stopped in a nearby field, informs com. Damian Wroczyński, press officer of the police in Wyszków.

The 40-year-old woman suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.

– After checking the police systems, it turned out that the vehicle was not registered and did not have the required liability insurance. Now the case will be thoroughly investigated by the police, who will then transfer the case to the family court – adds Kom. Wroczyński.

The police are asking for parental supervision

To drive a vehicle, such as a moped or a quad, an AM card is required, which is issued in WORD. The required age of the child is 14 years old.

– An unlicensed person, i.e. unfamiliar with traffic regulations, is sufficient to disobey the A-7 sign informing about yielding the right of way and leave the road subordinated to the car. The consequences of such an event are easy to predict. Let us remember that a fraction of a second decides about a tragedy – emphasizes Kom. Drężek-Zmysłowska and appeals to parents to keep special supervision over their children when moving such vehicles.
