Shelf Today she is 24th in the world, and in the first round she was supposed to face a qualifier. It was bad luck that one of the best players who passed the qualifying round was drawn to Fręki – Polina Kudermietowa.

The Russian, sister of the more famous and titled Weronika, reached the final of the WTA 500 in Brisbane a few days ago. She only lost there in three sets to Aryna Sabalenka. Thanks to this, she moved up to 57th place in the ranking. With this position, she wouldn't have had to play in the AO qualifications at all.

Beginning match it's break for break. Kudermietowa tried to play very aggressively, using every high ball to attack. However, she made a mistake more than once, at the end of the first game she made a double service error and the score was 0-1. A moment later, when she adjusted her aim and Fręch's second serve was too weak, the losses were quickly made up.

Festival of breakthroughs

When our tennis player played the ball longer, her opponent could eventually make a mistake. The Russian is in good shape, but on the other hand she also has three qualifying matches, which could not be without significance. She also lacked patience in exchanges at times and as a result she lost her serve once again. The number of errors on her part was increasing (1:2). Unfortunately, the pressed Polish woman was also broken in the next game to zero (2:2).

The festival of breakthroughs continued. In the fifth game, our tennis player took the serve from her opponent to zero. Two beautiful returns at the end, Kuderermietova's nerves as she shook her head in irritation at her team. 3:2 for the tennis player from Łódź. The 57th tennis player in the world played very nervously when serving. She was in a hurry and made numerous mistakes. Added to this was Fręch's good return and patient play, which resulted in another breakthrough for our tennis player. Her hand was clenched and on the other hand her rival's nervous face. 4:3.

After a while, the server held the serve for the first time in the match. Fortunately for us, Magdalena Fręch did it. The Pole served brilliantly and sent one ace. Polina Kudermetova tried to press, but her forehand down the line was slightly off target. 5:3!

Fręch withstood her rival's pressure

The beginning of the second game was perfect for Magdalena Fręch. Nervous Polina Kudermetova could no longer keep the ball in the court. She made a mistake on the length and hit the net. The Pole wisely proposed longer rallies, waited for mistakes, and changed the rhythm of the game herself, and as a result she led 2-0.

In the following minutes, however, the Russian stopped making mistakes, she hit practically everything and from every position. She hit hard and was awarded consecutive winners. As a result, the score was 3:2. We could have worried that this was not the beginning of her domination on the court, but not this time.

Perhaps the sixth game turned out to be crucial when Fręch could not be broken. She left at 3:30 p.m., with great support fanswho shouted “Magda, Magda” in the stands. 3:3 and then 4:3 for her. Kudermetova began to lose faith that she could end this match with a favorable result. After a while, these errors came back from her side again.

Our tennis player used her greater experience, played calmer and ultimately won 6:4, 6:4. Although there was a difficult ending when the opponent had two chances in the last game to make it 5:5. She didn't use them, she played too impatiently, and one of the balls in particular can haunt her at night. Placed perfectly, she broke her forehand.

Magdalena Fręch could enjoy her first victory this year in Melbourne. She dealt with a difficult opponent who plays in an unpleasant and very aggressive way. In the second round she will face Anna Blinkova (75th WTA). The Russian defeated the hosts' wild card representative Daria Saville (112th) 1:6, 6:4, 7:5.
