Deputy Prime Minister on the “difficult situation” in Kharkov

Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk, who returned from Kharkov on Friday, said that “the situation in the city is difficult.” She added that its inhabitants “amazed” her. – Kharkiv is well-kept, clean, people are focused and everyone understands what tasks lie ahead. The city, regional and military authorities in Kharkov are on site and everyone is aware of the challenges and responsibilities they face, she reported.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, Kharkov itself, located approximately 40 km from the border with Russia, is not currently under threat. The deputy prime minister said that the Russians who attack near the border “are trying to cause panic” among the population.

The Deputy Prime Minister informed that due to the Russian attacks carried out in recent days, the number of refugees heading to Kharkov is increasing. – These people lost everything. They left Wowczańsko under fire, from other places where they lost their homes and where the infrastructure was destroyed. Vowczansk was almost completely ruined. And this means a new wave of refugees, more women with children – said Wereszczuk.

Zelensky: no one reached the concrete defense line

The President of Ukraine commented on the situation in the northern part of the Kharkiv Oblast bordering Russia Volodymyr Zelensky.

– Nobody reached the concrete defense line. What they say there (Russians – ed.) is nonsense. The first line is not a border, you cannot build there (…). That's pretty much where they are now. This is the first line that was built during the war, under constant fire, by our military. The first and second lines were built by the army, and the third line was built by the local authorities. She is the strongest, said the president.

Zelensky repeated his appeal to Western allies for quick supplies of weapons. As he said, Kiev's partners “would like Ukraine to win in such a way that Russia would not lose.” – It would be an unpredictable failure and unpredictable geopolitics. I don't think it works that way. For Ukraine to win, we must receive everything that comes with victory, he said in a conversation with journalists on Thursday.

Zelensky on the ceasefire: it doesn't work with such an enemy

During his meeting with journalists on Thursday, the head of state described the idea presented by the president as logical France Emmanuel Macron's idea of sending Western soldiers to Ukraine to train Ukrainians there. – Training in Ukraine is logical, we have already talked about it. It's better than going, for example, to France or even Poland, said the president.

However, Zelensky was skeptical about the idea of a truce for the duration of the Summer Olympics in Paris. – We already had a ceasefire, but it doesn't work with an enemy like this. There is a risk: who will guarantee that during the ceasefire, their (Russian – ed.) forces will not approach us? It's not like a ceasefire prevents equipment from getting close and then going on the offensive, he said.

In a conversation with journalists, the president also stated that he saw no reason why Western weapons transferred to his country should not be used to fight military targets on Russian territory. – I don't think there should be any bans, because we are not talking about using Western weapons to attack the Ukrainian army on Russian territory. This is defense, he said.
