The Russians have still not reached the “concrete defense line” in the Kharkiv region, said President Volodymyr Zelensky. The offensive of Russian forces in this section continues. The commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Oleksandr Syrski, said that in the border region, the Russians “expanded the zone of active hostilities by almost 70 kilometers.” We summarize the past week in Ukraine.

President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters on Friday that the Russians are now stopped at the first line of defense in the Kharkiv Oblast (bordering Russia). – This line was built under constant fire by our soldiers – he said. As he said, “the second and third lines of defense are also facing the Russian forces, the most powerful one, made of concrete, built by the local authorities.”

– No one has reached the concrete defense line yet – assured Zelensky and added that in the Kharkiv section “Ukrainian defense forces have stabilized the situation.” – The deepest point of Russian attack in this place is 10 kilometers – said the president.

“The enemy has entered the gray zone”

Questions about the defense lines arose after Russian attacks intensified in the Kharkiv Oblast in early May, Russian forces crossed the border there and occupied a number of border villages on the Ukrainian side.

Denys Yaroslavsky, commander of the intelligence unit of the Ukrainian armed forces fighting near the city of Vovchansk, reported on social media that “the first line of fortifications and mines simply did not exist in this place.” “The enemy freely entered the gray zone along the entire border line. Within two years (from the beginning of the armed invasion – editor), concrete fortifications as high as a three-story building were to be built in this place, and the area was not even mined.”

The “grey zone” is the territory where Ukrainian forces maintain defense.

The authorities of the Kharkiv Oblast justified that the first line of defense was built under constant Russian fire and therefore may not have been very “tight”.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrski, reporting on the situation in the Kharkiv Oblast, said that Russian forces in this section “have expanded the zone of active hostilities by almost 70 kilometers.”

The Russians' goal – as the commander explained – is to create a situation in which the Ukrainian defense forces will be forced to “use an additional number of brigades from the reserve”.

The evacuation of civilians continues

More than 10,000 people have already been evacuated from the combat zone in the Kharkiv region, said the head of the Kharkiv region authorities, Oleh Syniehubov.

Only 100 civilians remained in the shelled city of Volchansk, with a population of 17,000. Taking them away – as Syniehubov said – is so far impossible because they are located in the northern part of the city, occupied by the Russians.

The American television CNN reported in one of its reports that in Wowczańsk “every street seems to be on fire and the shelling does not stop.”

General Staff Reports

The latest reports of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces regarding the situation on the front show that Russian troops have significantly intensified attacks on Ukrainian army positions.

Intense fighting continues not only in the Kharkiv region. IN Donbass, in the Lymański and Kramatorsk directions, the Ukrainians repel several dozen attacks a day. The Russians are also continuing attempts to capture the city of Vovchansk, located near the border with Russia, the report said.

Conquered areas

The American daily “Washington Post”, assessing the progress of Russian troops on the Ukrainian front, reported that “Russia has gained more territory this year than Ukraine liberated during last year's counteroffensive.”

“From June to December last year, Ukrainian forces recaptured 515 square kilometers of territory, while Russian forces captured an area of 761 square kilometers since the beginning of April this year,” the publication reported. The reason for this state of affairs was the problems of the Ukrainian forces with weapons.

The Washington Post wrote that Russia attacked many points along the 966 km front line in… Ukrainewhile Ukrainian forces waited for reinforcements and weapons.

Road accidents in occupied Mariupol

In Russian-occupied Mariupol (Donetsk Oblast), the numbers increased road accidents with the participation of Russian soldiers. The occupiers are “ramming” civilians' cars – said city councilors who are outside its borders.

“City residents regularly complain that there is 'full chaos' on the roads because Mariupol still lacks traffic lights, pedestrian markings and traffic control,” the councilors said.

Mobilization Act

On May 18, a new mobilization law entered into force in Ukraine, which introduces a number of changes to the current army recruitment system. It expands the authorities' powers to issue summonses.

The media in Kiev devotes a lot of attention to this matter. The Ukrainian section of the BBC assessed that “the law is one of the largest reforms of mobilization regulations in the history of Ukraine, which the Ministry of Defense in Kiev called 'a change in the approach to war'.”

Ukrainian men can be mobilized voluntarily between the ages of 18 and 25. From 25 to 60 years old – forced. The dates for demobilization during the war were not specified in the act, the BBC reported.
