The Sanitary and Epidemiological Station's guidelines are clear – food flooded by flood water must be disposed of. Even if it was in an airtight package. The Sanitary and Epidemiological Station informs about the initiation of an inspection.

In many places, the flood nightmare may have already passed away, but it is not over. – This water mixes with various other dirt. I suspect that it is not safe – says Mrs. Wioletta, a resident of Oława.

Thousands of articles are useless and pose a hidden threat, which is why the Sanitary and Epidemiological Station started inspections. The inspectors emphasize that it is not a pity that this food will be wasted. Safety first. – Anything that came into direct contact with flood water or was flooded must simply be thrown away. However, in the case of stores, it must be disposed of – explains Magdalena Mieszkowska from the Provincial Sanitary and Epidemiological Station in Wrocław.

Experts warn that even hermetically sealed products can be dangerous. – A bottle, jar or can is also not suitable for reuse after being contaminated by flood water. For a simple reason, we are unable to sterilize, clean and disinfect them in such a way that they will not be contaminated when opened – explains Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, Chief Sanitary Inspector.

Waste disposal is also becoming a challenge

Mountains of garbage and waste are also a problem. – This rising water took practically everything with it. We are not only talking about the formation of some sludge, flooding of houses and buildings, but there were dead animals there and there were also cemeteries along the way – points out Piotr Tokarski from REMONDIS Polska, a recycling company.

The government is trying to stop price speculation by specialist companies. – There are regulations that give voivodes tools to make decisions about imposing an order on a company to export a specific fraction of waste – says Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment.
