The season for silvery clouds has begun. “Fascinating two months ahead of us”

We are only a few days away from the start of astronomical summer. Traditionally, this time of year is full of unusual phenomena, such as silvery clouds. We could admire the bright glow in the sky last night. Some of you managed to capture them.

Last night, perfect conditions for admiring the silvery clouds appeared over Poland. This spectacular phenomenon is nothing more than the highest of the clouds that are observed on our planet. As reported by Karol Wójcicki, author of the blog “With the head in the stars”, they are formed at an altitude of about 80 kilometers, probably by icing particles of cosmic dust or remnants of meteor flights. Most often they take the form of a thin strip.

“Hanging at such a height, like a large mirror, they perfectly reflect the sunlight falling on the other side of the planet. That is why in the middle of the night the clouds clearly cut off from the darkness of the sky” – said the expert.

Silvery clouds – where to look for them?

Silvery clouds should be looked for over the northern horizon around 10:30 p.m. and after 1 a.m. For observation, it is worth choosing a place without additional light sources, such as street lamps or billboards, and make sure that the view is not obscured by trees or other elements of the landscape.

Wójcicki warned not to confuse silvery clouds with pink-red clouds visible after sunset. “As the name suggests – ‘silver’ has nothing to do with red (except for extremely unique moments that can be captured mainly in photography). Don’t be fooled” – he wrote.

Recent years have been full of beautiful views of the sky, but now – due to the high activity of the Sun – the conditions for observing the phenomenon are not particularly favorable. Therefore, clouds may appear less frequently and in a less spectacular form. As Wójcicki noted, we will have to wait about seven or eight years for the return of equally spectacular glows.

“Try to hunt for silvery clouds in the following nights. The season has just begun, so we have two fascinating months ahead of us” – summed up Wójcicki. And if you manage to “hunt” phenomena, share your photos on Contact 24.
