The Sejm adopted an amendment to the act on the protection of the state border. Amendment of the act on border protection – what it assumes

The amendment – as its authors point out – is to ensure the effectiveness of actions taken by the Border Guard in order to protect the border in the event of a threat to state security or public order. As indicated in its justification, the need for the proposed changes is directly related to the ongoing crisis on the Polish-Belarusian section of the state border.

The amendment adopted by the Sejm makes it possible, inter alia, to introduce a temporary ban on staying in a specific area of the border zone. The area and duration of the ban will be specified in the regulation of the minister of the interior and administration.

The solution will not apply to residents of the prohibited area, people working there for gainful employment, as well as students or people using border crossings. The consent for the presence of other people, in particular journalists, may be expressed by the locally competent commander of the Border Guard post.

The new regulations also extend the catalog of direct coercive measures to include knapsack throwers of incapacitating substances that could be used by Border Guard officers. Other changes assume, inter alia, abolition of the age limit for candidates for service in the Border Guard and the possibility of obtaining compensation by entities carrying out specific activities in the area prohibited to stay.
