On Tuesday, the parliamentary regulatory committee is to deal with the issue of the immunity of the president of the Supreme Audit Office, Marian Banas. The prosecutor’s office and the CBA accuse him of a number of irregularities regarding his financial statements. Material of the magazine “Polska i Świat”.
Marian Banaś, elected by Law and Justice, is today the salt in the eye of the ruling party. – The game around Marian Banas is designed for one goal only: to remove the immunity, put Banas in prison and shut his mouth, says Krzysztof Śmiszek from the Left.
The investigators want to bring a dozen or so charges to the President of the Supreme Audit Office, including false statements in asset declarations. Marian Banaś was to avoid paying taxes even before he became the head of the Supreme Audit Office. – They can replace Marian Banas with some of their PiS, obedient apparatchik who will not control their scams – says Sławomir Neumann from the Civic Platform.
The politicians of the Civic Coalition say that the time will come that Marian Banaś will be responsible for any wrongdoing – there is no reason to waive his immunity now. – If we are a state of law, or a relatively efficient state, then the prosecutor’s office and the CBA should have said: do not choose this guy, because he may be charged immediately. And what, they suddenly waited two years – points out Robert Kropiwnicki from the Civic Platform.
The CBA and the prosecutor’s office question Banas’ property declarations
The question marks had appeared earlier – before Marian Banaś even started managing the Supreme Chamber of Control. Despite this, he was elected head of the Supreme Audit Office by a majority of PiS votes. – This is a purely political procedure. Marian Banaś stopped playing in the PiS team and suddenly there were receipts – believes Śmiszek.
The CBA and the prosecutor’s office are questioning Marian Banas’ property declarations made since 2005, when he began to exercise the highest functions in the state. According to the services, the head of the Supreme Audit Office lied in as many as 10 statements. – It is not a matter of clarifying the matter by the prosecutor’s office, because there is no independent prosecutor’s office in Poland – emphasizes Cezary Tomczyk from the Civic Platform. – It is known that Marian Banas was not dealt with without political approval, so the point is really to humiliate and destroy the man who controlled the government – he adds.
“Rzeczpospolita” was added to the report of the CBA and the prosecutor’s office – in 2016 instead of PLN 550,000 in cash, after an analysis of bank accounts, according to investigators, Banaś was to have over 963,000. In the following year, the amount of property disclosed was to be more than twice lower than the actual amount. And in August 2019, when he assumed the position of the President of the Supreme Chamber of Control, he was supposed to hide over half a million zlotys.
NIK reports hit the PiS government
– It is only surprising that since Marian Banaś is so active as the president of the Supreme Audit Office, Zbigniew Ziobro and our state services have more and more irregularities – points out Tomasz Trela from the Left.
Recent NIK reports for PiS are not favorable – including the GetBack issue, financial controls of the Polish National Foundation’s expenditures, the construction of the power plant in Ostrołęka or the envelope elections that did not take place. A detailed report on the Justice Fund will also be published in the days.
The Committee on Regulations will consider the request for waiver of immunity
– No politician: PO, PSL or PiS is here to assess the evidence. An independent court is from this – emphasizes Janusz Kowalski from PiS. The prosecutor’s office, supervised by the Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro, did not want to comment on the matter on Monday. Marian Banaś still maintains that he does not intend to resign from his position.
“The rulers have forgotten the good of the state and the only thing that matters to them is the good of the party. They do everything to stay in power, even at the cost of breaking the law,” believes Marian Banaś. The request for waiver of immunity is to be dealt with on Tuesday by the parliamentary regulatory committee – only then will it be able to go to the parliamentary deliberations.
