The last section of the waterway
The subject of the order is to develop project documentation for works that consist in the construction of the water track on the Elbląg River. The track is to be 36 m wide and 5 m deep at the sections from point P1 (located at the height of the sewage treatment plant) to point P2 (at the fork of the Jagiellonian river and the Jagiellonian Canal) and from point P2 to the Port point (located at the height of the European Union bridge).
The shore strengthens will also be made and a turntable with a diameter of 160 m at the fork of the Elbląg River and the Jagiellonian Canal will be built.
The planned deepening of the water track on the Elbląg River is the last section of the waterway through the Vistula Spit, which was made by the government.
The scope of work on the Vistula Spit
As previously informed by the Maritime Office in Gdynia, in January last year, the Ministry of Infrastructure ordered the office director to prepare project documentation, navigation analysis and technical expertise. The idea is to determine the necessary investments that allow you to finish the water track and use the infrastructure of the port in Elbląg – the investor explained at the time.
The Maritime Office in Gdynia added that from January 2024 work has been carried out on the deepening of the Elbląg River, implemented as part of the 4th stage of the construction of a waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gulf of Gdańsk. The contract includes the implementation of the next section of the water track with a depth of 5 m. On the section P1 (at the height of the sewage treatment plant) to P2 (at the fork of the river and the Jagiellonian Canal), the DNA tests and purification of the DNA from ferromagnetic obstacles (e.g. scrap metal, reinforced concrete elements were also carried out , bulky obstacles, historical military residues). The continuation of the work is partly scheduled for this year.
The total length of the waterway from the Gulf of Gdańsk through the Vistula Lagoon to Elbląg is almost 23 km, including the passing through the Vistula Lagoon is just over 10 km, on the Elbląg River – also over 10 km. The remaining approx. 2.5 km is a section, which will consist of a lock and an external port and a parking stand. The channel and the entire water track will ultimately be 5 m deep.
Work on the Vistula Spit
Work on the Vistula Spit began in October 2019. In September 2022, the shipping channel was opened through the Vistula Spit, after the first stage of the project “Construction of a waterway connecting the Vistula Lagoon with the Gdańsk Bay”.
The second stage of the investment includes the reconstruction of the existing water track, about 10.4 km long, on the Elbląg River in the field of the shores of the edges, which will ultimately take over the functions of earth flood embankments, construction of low marina, facilitating access to the river and the construction of a rotary bridge over the Elbląg River in Nowaków , with changes in the road system. Work under the second stage began in April 2021. The rotary bridge is to be opened in the coming days.
As part of the third stage, the construction of a water track on the Vistula Lagoon is carried out, at a length of about 8.2 km.
