As many as 24% of Britons have had to throw away cosmetics at an airport. The regulations prohibit carrying liquids of more than 100 ml in hand luggage, but as it turns out, not everyone is aware of this or sometimes they forget to do so. On average, passengers threw away three cosmetics worth 7 pounds – according to research on 1.5 thousand people conducted by Ripe Hair & Beauty, recalls “The Sun”.

The 100ml rule generates huge costs. But airports are starting to move away from it

Total in July and August, more than 41.3 million cosmetics are thrown away, according to data. Their value is as much as 291.6 million pounds. So we have a huge problem of wasting money, which has a negative impact not only on the wallets of travelers but also on the environment. Cosmetics that are thrown away will be bought again, after all, they are indispensable to us. On top of that, there are the costs of disposal. And we are talking about just one nation.

This problem is slowly decreasing, however. Some airports are moving away from the 100 ml rule. This is made possible by modern scanners that use computed tomography technology. The first airport in Europewhich started using modern scanners, was London City Airport, which allowed it to abandon restrictive baggage checks, including liquid limits.

The UK aims to have every airport have access to similar technology by 2024. In addition, modern security control systems have been introduced at Shannon Airport in Ireland and at the terminal in Prague, Czech Republic, and last year Helsinki joined the group.

Chopin Airport will also abolish the 100 ml rule

In March this year, Chopin Airport also announced that it would install CT scanners. Passengers will no longer have to take electronics and liquids out of their bags and backpacks. – I know that the regulations regarding the rules for carrying liquids are widely known, but the norm is that tourists they must throw away a bottle of drink or liquid cosmetics because they exceed the permitted limits. Thanks to CT cameras, this limit of 100 milliliters of capacity for liquids carried in hand luggage will be increased – said Chopin Airport spokeswoman Anna Dermont, quoted by RMF FM.

A similar solution will also appear at other Polish airports. In January, the airport in Kraków announced that modern scanners were to be put into use in the middle of this year, but there is no information to date whether this has actually happened. In February, the airport in Pyrzowice announced a similar decision, but in the case of Katowice Airport, it will happen during a major reconstruction planned for 2024-2028.
