The Marshal of the Sejm ordered the Supreme Audit Office to audit the financing of churches and religious associations from public funds. Szymon Hołownia wants special attention to be paid to the financing of the Catholic Church from November 12, 2019 to November 12, 2023. In the background there is a reservation regarding public money for Rydzyk's father's empire, but also the issue of depriving the Boys' Home in Broniszewice of part of public support.

At the Boy's Home in Broniszewice, the Dominican sisters take care of over 60 boys and men with disabilities. And this center run by nuns has just found itself at the center of a political dispute.

Marshal of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia commissioned the Supreme Audit Office to review state financing of religious associations, with particular emphasis on the Catholic Church and Father Tadeusz Rydzyk.

– How many millions of public money, from public funds, from foundations financed by the State Treasury went to party propaganda, to building a media empire of someone who was supposed to support the ruling camp, and not to real things that are supposed to serve people? – Szymon Hołownia asked during Saturday's meeting with voters. For now, it is known that during the PiS government it was PLN 400 million for media and museum initiatives of Tadeusz Rydzyk's father.

– I think that Tadeusz Rydzyk needs not only the Supreme Audit Office, but also the prosecutor's office – comments Bartosz Arłukowicz, MEP from the Civic Coalition. – I don't see any problems here and it is normal that the state supports the activities of various institutions – replies Krzysztof Szczucki, an MP from Law and Justice.

The flow of money directed to Father Tadeusz Rydzyk's initiatives was exceptionally wide, and United Right politicians were regular guests on Radio Maryja and TV Trwam. Now, however, they argue that Szymon Hołownia's move is a political trick. – The left accuses (Szymon Hołownia – editor's note) of excessive conservatism and right-wing, so he is trying to settle it with a request to the Supreme Audit Office to investigate support for church institutions – says Krzysztof Szczucki – This is an attempt to play on anti-Catholic emotions – adds Wojciech Kolarski, minister in the Chancellery of the President. Hołownia himself explains that there is nothing anti-Catholic about it. – As a citizen and as a Catholic, I have the right and we all have the right to know what public money is spent on, said the Speaker of the Sejm.

Government strategy regarding the Church Fund

According to the Left, however, it is too late for such gestures. – Mr. Marshal is waving an anti-clerical flag, but it is already too late. The announcements were made during the election campaign. Today it has to be settled, said Krzysztof Śmiszek, Deputy Minister of Justice.

The left wants to liquidate the Church Fund. An inter-ministerial team has been established in Tusk's government to prepare a strategy on this matter. The recommendations are to be ready by mid-year.

– Poland is the only country in Central and Eastern Europe that has not regulated the ownership issue, i.e. has not adopted a reprivatization act. It would be good to resolve this at some point, comments Stanisław Tyszka, Confederation MP. – This topic is before us, we will discuss it. We see that it arouses great emotions precisely because of the irregularities that may have occurred when transferring funds to Tadeusz Rydzyk – says Magdalena Sroka from PSL.

Even if the ruling coalition reached an agreement on this matter, the president's signature would be needed. Therefore, it is difficult to say whether and when there will be changes in the Church Fund.

“We felt a little hurt”

– We felt a bit offended by this entry because it concerns the Church, which means it also concerns us – Tymoteusz Gil's sister from the Boy's Home in Broniszewice commented on Szymon Hołownia's announcement.

Last year, the previous voivode of Greater Poland, still from PiS, withheld PLN 600,000 in funding from the facility. When the media publicized it, he changed his mind. Now history is repeating itself. – This year our subsidy was also reduced, we don't know why. Perhaps prices will suddenly drop dramatically, which we really hope for, says Tymoteusz's sister. This is, of course, ironic, because there is no way to count on a price drop. Money is needed so that, as the sister said, the Boy's Home does not have to worry about the everyday life of its charges.

– We don't go on holidays abroad, we don't use anyone knows what kind of cars. Every zloty in a house like ours (editor's note) is certainly not spent on luxurious things, but on what is most necessary to ensure a comfortable life for the weakest – says Sister Eliza Myk.

While in Greater Poland, the Marshal of the Sejm met with the sisters from Broniszewice. He promised to intervene with the voivode. – So that institutions such as the wonderful House in Broniszewice run by Dominican nuns do not have to fear that the state will take their money. The state should give money to such institutions, not take it away, Hołownia announced. – There is a problem? Let's call it where he is. Is it in Toruń or Broniszewice? – added.

There is complete agreement in the ruling coalition on this issue. – The sisters run a beautiful place and should have stable financing from the state – emphasizes Krzysztof Śmiszek. Coalition politicians also point out that not all expenditure on church initiatives is the same. – If, for example, the Church is the administrator of a monument and is responsible for ensuring that the monument is renovated and kept in good condition, it is natural that it can apply for public funds for this purpose. Such renovation should be possible with public money. This is something completely different than ordinary businesses run by church-related organizations, emphasizes Adrian Zandberg, MP from Razem. Dominican women hope that they will not have to ask for money every year. They would just like to be calm about them.
