– As for Belarus and what is happening on the border with Poland, we are very concerned about it and we pay special attention to it – said Harris during the Friday press conference.

– I believe that Lukashenka’s regime is involved in very disturbing activities. We discussed it with President Macron and the attention of the world and its leaders is focused on what is happening there – she added. She did not refer to the comparisons suggested by the French journalist with the situation on the Polish border with the crisis on the southern border of the USA.

Many topics of conversation with the president of France

Harris met on Thursday with the French President and attended the Paris Peace Forum conference. As she said, she discussed with the French president on many topics, including on cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the Sahel, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and bottlenecks in the global supply chain. At the same time, she stated that she had not spoken to Macron about the dispute over Australia’s purchase of US submarines at the expense of those in France, which had led to a diplomatic crisis between the countries.

– We did not discuss this topic, because this is not what this journey is about. We discussed the issues ahead, Harris said. She added that her presence in France demonstrates the importance the US attaches to nurturing relations with its allies in Europe and stressed that they cannot be taken for granted.

Harris has been in France since Tuesday for a four-day visit. On Friday, the vice president will take part in an international conference on Libya.

Blinken: The US is considering using “different tools” in response to Belarusian actions

US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken also spoke on the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border on Friday.

– We are very concerned about the use of migrants as a political weapon by the regime. I will not announce any possible sanctions in advance, but we are considering using the various tools we have, he said in a press conference following a meeting with his Qatar counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed ibd Abdulrahman as-Sani.

Blinken also referred to “irregular” movements of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border, expressing his concern and warning Russia against committing “a serious mistake”.

– I do not know what the intentions are behind it, I do not know what is in the mind of President Putin (…) but we have seen in the past how Russia massed troops at the border, stated that it was provoked by Ukraine and carried out an invasion, in fact doing what she has planned (…) so it provokes fears of a repeat of 2014 – said the US Secretary of State. He stressed that such a scenario would be a serious mistake for Russia, and Washington is closely coordinating its approach with its allies in Europe.

Head of American diplomacy on the civil war in Ethiopia and talks with the head of Qatar’s foreign ministry

Blinken met on Friday in Washington with Qatar’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister to sign an agreement establishing Qatar as the formal representative of US interests in Afghanistan with the closure of the US embassy in Kabul. The two diplomats also signed an agreement formalizing the countries’ cooperation in facilitating the evacuation from Afghanistan by Afghan associates of the US forces in that country.

Blinken said all US citizens and Afghanistan green card holders have been given the option to leave the country. He also said that, thanks to cooperation with Qatar, the Kabul airport was open and Afghan visa applicants continued to fly. Qatar is also a transition point for them before continuing their trip to the USA.

The head of US diplomacy also referred to the Ethiopian civil war, warning of the real possibility of an “implosion” of the state and called for a political agreement that “is not only possible but necessary”.
