On Monday morning, the media published information about a large group of migrants walking on the Belarusian side towards the border with Poland. Migrants gathered near Kuźnica. The Ministry of National Defense informed in the afternoon that the services of the Ministry of Interior and Administration and soldiers had managed to stop the first mass attempt to cross the border. The migrants have set up a camp in the Kuźnica region, they are guarded by the Belarusian services.

The situation on the border was discussed in “Tak jest” on TVN24 by Professor Agnieszka Legucka, an analyst at the Polish Institute of International Affairs, as well as a representative of the Vistula Academy of Finance and Business, and Professor Maciej Duszczyk from the Center for Migration Research at the University of Warsaw.

Experts were asked how Poland could respond to the aggressive actions of the Belarusian regime. – Not only we can, but we have to defend ourselves, because we are in the crosshairs of Belarusian and Russian hybrid actions – said Professor Legucka. She pointed out that the actions of the Lukashenka regime are based on propaganda, disinformation and the exploitation of migrants.

She explained that, therefore, Poland should respond with “all kinds of appropriate hybrid measures”. She mentioned strategic communication and the internationalization of the crisis. – You can already see that after the last action of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, who organized a huge column of migrants, the eyes of the world opened to this problem – she added.

Little Duszczyk: in fact, the state has become a smuggler of people

Professor Maciej Duszczyk pointed out that “in this case, from what Belarusian oppositionists say, we have a state involved in attracting these people, state travel agencies”.

– So in fact the state has become a smuggler of people. We have never had it in our history, such a situation – he added.

He said that in order “to stop this madness we are dealing with (…) we should use all possible instruments”.

– It seems to me that there is no one golden solution here, that we will touch, like with a magic wand, some instrument and Lukashenka will withdraw – he continued.

Professor Duszczyk said that “at some point Lukashenka, his people must feel that they will really lose everything”. He also stressed that “we must reduce this migration channel at all costs”.

State of emergency at the border

Since September 2, due to the migratory pressure, a state of emergency has been in force in 183 towns in the Podlaskie and Lubelskie provinces adjacent to the border with Belarus. A dam is to be built on the border with Belarus in the first half of 2022.

When reporting on the events at the border, the media can use almost exclusively official government recordings and information. Journalists have no access to the area under the state of emergency.
