Due to the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border, the European Commission monitors flights to Belarus from around 20 countries. This is to identify migration routes and, as a result, to prevent the Belarusian regime from encouraging more migrants to travel to the EU’s borders.

– We look at the frequency of flights, we look at flight schedules, at the occupancy of planes – said the spokesman of the European Commission Peter Stano to journalists in Brussels.

When asked about the countries from which he monitors departures, he mentioned, among others, Morocco, Syria, Iran, Qatar, South Africa, Somalia, India, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, Russia, Azerbaijan, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Yemen.

The European Commission, when asked about Russia’s potential involvement in the crisis, replied that it was “very closely” monitoring the situation in that country. – It is on our radar and we will evaluate the information and data we have in the light of the flight situation and Russia’s possible involvement in this matter – noted Spinant. The European Commission also said that no sanctions against Russia are planned in the context of the crisis on the Polish-Belarusian border.

The plan for the visits of the deputy head of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas to the countries of origin of the migrants is not yet ready, Spinant said. Neither did she say which countries Schinas intends to visit. On Monday, von der Leyen announced that the deputy head of the Commission would travel to the main countries of origin and transit of migrants in the coming days.

Von der Leyen: Belarus must stop endangering people’s lives

Von der Leyen on Monday called on EU member states to finally approve an extended system of sanctions against the Belarusian authorities responsible for the current hybrid attack. She announced that the EU would investigate how to impose sanctions on airlines from third countries that smuggle people.

In addition, she said that she had spoken with the prime ministers of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia to express the EU’s solidarity and discuss measures that the EU could take to support their countries in their efforts to deal with this crisis. – Belarus must stop endangering people’s lives, the instrumentalization of migrants by Belarus for political purposes is unacceptable – she emphasized.

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Senate also commented on the actions of the Lukashenka regime in the context of the situation on the border in a Twitter entry.

“The use of desperate families of refugees and migrants by forcing them to cross closed borders, threatening their security in this process, is both regrettable and regrettable. The crimes and inhuman behavior of the Lukashenka regime know no borders” – it was written in the entry.

According to information from Polish authorities and services, as well as videos posted by them on social media, from Monday morning a large group of migrants gathered on the border between Belarus and Poland, making attempts to cross the border by force. The Ministry of National Defense informed the same day in the afternoon that the Ministry of Interior and Administration services and soldiers had managed to stop the first mass attempt to cross the border. The migrants set up a camp in the Kuźnica region. They are guarded by the Belarusian services.

State of emergency

Since the spring, the number of attempts to illegally cross the Belarusian border with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland by migrants from the Middle East, Africa and other regions has increased sharply. The EU and its member states believe that this is the result of the deliberate actions of Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, which instrumentally uses migrants in response to sanctions.

From September 2, due to the migratory pressure in 183 localities in the province. Podlasie and Lubelskie, adjacent to the border with Belarus, a state of emergency is in force. A dam is to be built on the border with Belarus in the first half of 2022.

When reporting on the events at the border, the media can use almost exclusively official government recordings and information. Journalists have no access to the area under the state of emergency.
