Firefighters have their hands full due to heavy rainfall and strong winds. Until Tuesday evening, they traveled all over Poland over 1700 times, most of the interventions were in Silesia.

By 8 p.m. on Tuesday, firefighters recorded 1,740 interventions related to rainfall and strong winds across the country, said Brigadier Karol Kierzkowski from the State Fire Service. The largest number of events was recorded in the following voivodships: Śląskie (455), Małopolskie (395), Świętokrzyskie (385) and Łódzkie (170).

Interventions in Silesia

In Silesia, where the difficult situation is due to the high water level in rivers, firefighters were most often called in Będzin, Mysłowice, Sosnowiec and Tychy. Firefighters mainly pump out water from flooded basements, flooded properties, they also go to damaged trees. The previous day, due to weather conditions, they intervened 60 times.

The increasing level of Przemsza caused local flooding in Mysłowice, the water poured over the embankment – informed Dariusz Wójtowicz, the city’s president. Houses and workplaces were flooded after heavy rains. “The increasing water level in the Przemsza river caused local flooding. Water overflows through the embankment near Kacza Street and in the vicinity of the Castle Park. The slopes by the A4 motorway in the area of ​​Brzęczkowice and Brzezinka are sliding. Residential buildings and workplaces have been flooded” – informed the president on Facebook. He added that all municipal services, employees of the State Fire Service and three Volunteer Fire Brigades in Mysłowice and municipal companies work in the field, trying to minimize the effects of rainfall.

Flood rescue service

On a dozen or so water gauges in the province. Śląskie voivodship water levels in rivers exceed the warning levels, and in several cases exceed the alarm levels. The disturbing hydrological situation also prevails in Małopolska, but also in other parts of the country.

In connection with the expected heavy rainfall and the expected further increase in the water level in the rivers, the Silesian voivode Jarosław Wieczorek announced a flood emergency in the following poviats: Bielski, Żywiec, Cieszyn and Bielsko-Biała – the Silesian Voivodeship Office in Katowice reported in the evening. The presidents of Bielsko-Biała and Oświęcim also announced flood relief on Tuesday.

The weather is not over yet

Rainy weather has been present in the south of the country for several days. Meteorologists predict further rainfall throughout the province. The warnings of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management will apply until Wednesday morning. There are third and second degree alerts in place in some locations.

As reported by the representatives of the State Water Management – Polish Waters, due to the current situation, they conduct increased monitoring of rivers, being on constant readiness and in contact with crisis management services.
