A squall ridge, also called a shelf cloud, often heralds the arrival of a storm. This dangerous-looking phenomenon appeared on Wednesday over Poznań. We received photos of dark clouds on Contact 24.

Than Poly brought a violent aura to many regions of Poland on Wednesday. Storms appeared, among others, in Mazovia, Łódź Land, Lower Silesia, Kuyavia, Silesia, Podkarpacie, Lesser Poland and Wielkopolska. Hail also fell in the Opole region.

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued hail storm warnings across most of the country.

A squall embankment over Poznań

“Calm before the storm” – wrote Reporter 24 with the nickname “Pzn” about the squall shaft that heralded storms.

A squall ridge is formed at the front edge of a storm zone as a result of the clash of two different air masses. Its occurrence is preceded by a gusty and violent wind called a squall. In the region of appearance of this type of cloud, there is also usually heavy rainfall.
