Arrest of the President of the National Bank of Poland Adam Glapiński before the State Tribunal was one of 100 specific actions of the Civic Coalition. The motion for such a move was signed by over 190 MPs from the ruling coalition and is currently being dealt with by a parliamentary committee. On Thursday (September 12), its meeting was held. Among other things, a date for the examination of witnesses was set, which provoked the president of the National Bank of Poland to issue a statement and once again assure his innocence.
“There are no significant allegations”
– The actions of the National Bank of Poland under my leadership saved the economy from the crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic and eliminated inflation resulting from the actions Russia. Today, for these actions, the parliamentary majority is threatening me with the State Tribunal – said Adam Glapiński in a video posted by bank central. – I categorically deny all allegations of the preliminary motion to hold him accountable before the State Tribunal. Because in reality they have no factual or legal justification – he added.
The applicants accuse the president of the National Bank of Poland, Adam Glapiński, of violating the constitution and laws in connection with the position he holds. He obviously does not agree with this. – This procedure was initiated due to an alleged violation of the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland and laws in connection with my position as president of the National Bank of Poland. I would like to point out that no significant, specific and objectively justified allegations have been presented that I, as president of the National Bank of Poland, have failed to fulfill the mandate indicated by the Constitution of the Republic of Poland and the law – Glapiński explained in a statement.
Adam Glapiński appeals to the government
In addition to the film material, the National Bank of Poland published statementin which he argues with each of the eight charges brought against the head of the central bank. Among others, he claims that he did not allow some members of the NBP and the Monetary Policy Council to information. The motion also included issues related to the bonus for President Adam Glapiński and the purchase of bonds in 2020. There is an accusation of actions leading to the weakening of the value of the złoty.
– The instrumental use of the constitutional liability procedure for immediate, exclusively political needs constitutes an abuse of law, and should not take place in a democratic state (…). Once again, we ask for deep consideration and abandonment of purely political actions that are objectively unjustified and harmful – the president of the National Bank of Poland appealed to the government. He warned that his punishment could have a negative impact on course zloty.
The decision to bring the NBP president before the State Tribunal is taken by the Sejm by an absolute majority, i.e. 230 votes. The Civic Coalition, Third Way (PSL and Poland 250) and the Left – have a total of 246 seats in the Sejm. However, the Constitutional Tribunal ruled that this provision is inconsistent with the Constitution. In its opinion, the majority needed to bring the NBP president to justice should be at least three-fifths.
