The students insulted the teacher and broadcast it. “Prevention should cover the entire school community”

According to a psychologist from the University of Gdańsk, students from a Pomeranian school who cursed and insulted a teacher during last week’s lesson, broadcasting the entire incident online, used “cyberbaiting” against her.

Last week, four students from the primary school in Lisewo Malborskie (Pomeranian Voivodeship) during classes insulted and insulted the teacher, reporting the whole incident on a social networking site. In the video you can hear students cursing and insulting words directed at the teacher leading the lesson. The case went to the family court.

According to Dr. Marcin Szulc, a professor from the Department of Personality Psychology and Forensic Psychology of the University of Gdańsk, “this is not a new phenomenon.”

In an interview with PAP, the psychologist recalled the recording from 2003, in which students of a school in Toruń they put a trash can on the English teacher’s head and wiped his face with a chalkboard sponge. The whole incident – just like the students from Lisew Malborski – was recorded and made available on the Internet.

According to the psychologist, cyberbating, a form of online violence, took place during lessons in Lisewo Malborskie. The students probably wanted to provoke the teacher to such an extent as to throw him off balance and force him to behave unprofessionally, such as screaming or fistfighting, and then record the entire event and put it online or, as in this case, broadcast it live.

– In the case of cyberbaiting, the victims are most often teachers, because they have no way to defend themselves, especially when the school does not have a culture of using electronic media. The rules for using telephones at school are set out in the school’s statute, it is good if everyone participates in creating these rules: teachers, students and parents – assessed Dr. Szulc.

“Rational thinking develops later”

In his opinion, students commit such acts “for pranks, pranks, but also likes and comments”. She believes that breaking the norm in adolescence is often normative.

– I do not want to justify this act, because it clearly crossed the line and hurt a person, but we need to look at the teenager’s brain differently than at the adult brain – he assessed.

He emphasized that desynchronization of neural circuits is a feature of adolescence. – In adolescents, the circuits responsible for rational thinking and weighing conclusions develop later than those responsible for seeking pleasure. What’s more, they are fully mature only around the age of 25. That is why young people sometimes do stupid things and then regret it, said Dr. Szulc.

Prevention should cover the entire school community

Dr. Szulc pointed out that educators must take into account “difficult situations” in their work. In his opinion, the most effective factor protecting against “risk student behavior” is good relationships based on respect.

– If we build a relationship based on respect with the child, we become positive adults whom children trust, then we will have a chance to instill at least part of the world of values ​​in which we believe – said the psychologist.

He also pointed out that the most important is prevention, through social competence workshops and the endless educational work of teachers with students through conversations about the world of values ​​and the treatment of other people, especially those who have different views than ours. On the other hand, according to Szulc, prevention should concern all members of the school community – parents, teachers and students.
