At least five people died and dozens were injured – this is the death toll after a powerful tornado passed through the town of Greenfield in the US state of Iowa on Tuesday. A large part of the town was destroyed. – It lasted a few seconds – say residents who, with the help of services, are removing the effects of the element.

The tornado ripped off roofs, power lines, poles and cars. Many houses are razed to the ground. On Wednesday, state authorities reported that at least five people had been killed and 35 injured.

The airport in Des Moines, 85 kilometers away from Greenfield, suspended flights and redirected passengers to a secured part of the airport after warning of an approaching tornado.

The force of the tornado even broke wind turbine masts. This can be seen in the recording posted on social media by the AccuWeather meteorological website.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has declared a state of emergency in 15 counties due to the damage caused by the severe weather.

The tornado that ripped through Greenfield was one of at least 18 reported in Iowa on Tuesday.

Tens of thousands without electricity

As a result of tornadoes and strong storms on Wednesday evening local time in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois, more than 30,000 homes and businesses were without access to electricity.

On Tuesday, tornado warnings were issued for areas inhabited by over 13 million people in the states of: Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin – recalled the New York Times.
