A group of British parliamentarians wrote a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain, in which they call for sanctions on President Serbia Aleksandar Vuczic in connection with his recent visit to Moscow – said a member of the British parliament Emma Lewell, publishing the content of the document on social media.
“I wrote a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, asking for a change in the approach of our diplomacy to Serbia after the participation of President Vuczic in the parade in Moscow on May 9. The letter signed 25 other parliamentarians,” she said on Tuesday on the X Emma Lewell on Tuesday.
The authors of the letter say that Serbia under the rule of Aleksandar Vuczic strengthened the bonds with the president Russia Vladimir Putin, despite “terrible crimes committed against Ukraine since 2014”.
“In addition, President Vuczić tries to destabilize Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans region wider” – added. That is why parliamentarians “ask the government to change the course, starting with a series of directed sanctions against President Vuczic, his government and colleagues, as well as to use all diplomatic means to encourage allies to follow in our footsteps.”
The letter also emphasizes support for “students protesting in Serbia and citizens who are looking for a better future for their country, free of authoritarianism and corruption.”
For over half a year national protests are underway in Serbiawhich is a response to the tragedy at the railway station in Nowy Sad. Demonstrators accuse the authorities of corruption and neglect, which were to lead to the death of 16 people. The students organized most of the protests demanded the solution to the parliament and conducting early elections at the beginning of May.
A controversial visit to Moscow
President Vuczić as one of the few European leaders took part in the Moscow parade on the occasion of the Victory Day on Friday. After the celebrations, he met Putin at the first official conversations after Russia's invasion Ukraine in 2022. The main topic of the conversation – as the Serbian leader wrote on Instagram – was the energy cooperation of two countries.
