The State Department has approved the sale of 48 Patriot launchers and over 600 PAC-3 MSE missiles to Poland, said the Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak. He assessed that it was “an extremely important strengthening of the Polish air defense system”. Now the approval of the US Congress is needed. The amount of the transaction may amount to a maximum of USD 15 billion. Although the final value of the contract will be lower, it will certainly be the largest arms contract in the history of Poland.

“The Department of State has approved the sale of 48 Patriot launchers and over 600 PAC-3 MSE missiles to Poland. This is an extremely important strengthening of the Polish air defense system. We are now waiting for the approval of Congress USA“- wrote Blaszczak on Twitter.

Pentagon writes that the amount of the transaction may amount to a maximum of USD 15 billion. The amount of the largest Polish defense purchase to date, i.e. the first batch of Patriots, amounted to USD 4.75 billion. So it can be up to three times larger order.

The consent was also announced on Wednesday evening, Polish time by the government agency Defense Security Cooperation Agency, which deals with the sale of American weapons under the Foreign Military Sales program. The FMS procedures provide that the US Congress will now have time to express any objections. It’s a formality, because congressmen rarely exercise this right.

The maximum value of the contract was set by DSCA at USD 15 billion, i.e. PLN 61.5 billion at the current exchange rate. According to American procedures, now the parties, i.e. the governments of Poland and the USA, will enter into price negotiations, so the final price will ultimately be lower – the only question is by how much. However, it will certainly be the largest arms contract in the history of Poland. Currently, the palm of priority is held by the first contract for the Patriots, signed in 2018, which was then valued at $ 4.75 billion.

Ultimately, Poland wants to have eight Patriot batteries. In 2018, two were purchased in the first stage. Now we are negotiating the purchase of the missing six.

Patriots from the USA for Poland – what are we buying?

The announcement from the DSCA agency specifies that Poland intends to buy 48 M903 launchers and the same number of LINK sets that ensure the launcher’s connection with the command system. We also intend to procure up to 644 PAC-3 MSE missiles and twelve LTAMDS radars together with energy supply systems called LTPS. In addition, there are communications equipment, spare parts, etc., etc.
