A section of I-95, a major highway on the east coast of the United States, collapsed in Philadelphia. Earlier, a vehicle caught fire under it, city officials said on Sunday. No casualties were recorded.

Traffic in both directions on the eight-lane highway was stopped due to concerns about the condition of other sections of the road. Firefighters battled the fire emanating from the vehicle. “(Earlier – ed.) We received information that it may have been a tanker or something like that,” said Derek Bowmer, head of the Philadelphia Fire Department’s battalion.

There is a risk of environmental impact

Dominick Mireles, director of the city’s Office of Emergency Management, said officials are concerned about the potential environmental impact of the accident due to its proximity to the Delaware River. “Today is going to be a long day,” he said, adding that efforts to repair the damage will likely take time.

The stretch of highway where the incident occurred is in Northeast Philadelphia, connecting the city with its northern suburbs. In the summer, on Sunday, it is used by sunbathers returning home. During the week it is crowded with commuters and vehicles bound for Boston, Baltimore and Washington DC.
