A secret U.S. Navy system designed to detect enemy submarines registered the implosion signal of a Titan submarine just after the sub lost contact with the surface, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday.

Experts involved in the search for the boat told the newspaper that the military began listening for the boat shortly after communication with the vessel was lost.

Anomaly detected

Shortly after the disappearance, the acoustic system detected a sound that was suspected to be a sign of the boat implosion near the wreck of the Titanic.

“The U.S. Navy conducted an analysis of acoustic data and detected an anomaly consistent with an implosion or explosion in the general vicinity of the area where the Titan submarine was located when communications were lost,” a naval official said.

The military man added that the signal was not conclusive evidence, but that information was immediately passed on to the commander in order to assist the rescue operation.
