About the latest data regarding number of births in war-torn Ukraine, writes The Kyiv Independent, citing data from the Opendatabot service from August 5.

According to research, the birth rate in Ukraine still falling. The latest data show that for every three deaths in the first six months of 2024, only one newborn occurred.

In the first half of this year 87,655 were born children. At the same time, there were 250,972 deaths – for various reasons. The analysis emphasized that these statistics are most likely incomplete due to Russian occupation parts of Ukrainian regions.

Although the downward trend has been ongoing since the outbreak of the pandemic and then the full-scale invasion by Russia, the data is alarming, and the country has long been struggling with demographic crisis.

According to the ministry's data, the largest number of births were registered in Kyiv (9,695), as well as in Lviv (7,923) and Dnipropetrovsk (6,962) regions. The fewest children were born in the front-line and border regions – Chernihiv (1,904), Sumy (1,798), Zaporozhye (1,576), Donetsk (702) and Kherson (221).

Heartbreaking Data from Ukraine: War and Demographic Crisis

Ukrainian authorities failed to collect data and provide statistics on births in Crimea or in the Luhansk region. The highest number of deaths was recorded in the first half of the year in the following regions: Dnipropetrovsk (26,374), Kharkiv (17,999) and Odessa (16,085).

The birth rate in 2024 is 1.4 times lower than in the first six months of 2021, when 132,595 births and 349,041 deaths were recorded (the peak period of the pandemic in Ukraine).

The portal emphasized at the end that the demographic crisis is deepened by emigration, as well as the refugees fleeing the war. It is estimated that there are currently six million citizens outside Ukraine. In 2024-25, the country another 700,000 may leave.

Ukraine had 37 million citizens by January 2024. UN forecasts show that by 2100 the population may fall to the level 15,3 mln.
