Poland is concerned about the attitude of Hungary, which is blocking the implementation of the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, government spokesman Piotr Mueller said at a press conference on Thursday. According to the information provided by an EU source, contrary to the conclusions of the European Council summit, Budapest blocked the adoption of the restrictions, raising new expectations.

– The position of Poland in this matter is unambiguous. The attitude of Hungary, despite the fact that decisions were made at the summit of the European Council, worries us, said the government spokesman Piotr Mueller at a press conference.

As he explained, “the framework of the sixth sanctions package, which covers oil, has been developed”. – It is very important for us to cut off these main sources of financing for Russia, which is why we clearly appeal to Hungary not to block this process. As far as I know, there are some nuances that are reported during these ambassadorial meetings – he added.

– The decisions made at the European Council were unambiguous and Poland – and I think that all European Union countries – wish to urgently adopt this proposal of sanctions, make it a reality, and block further supplies of funds to Russia, emphasized Mueller.

Hungary blocks EU sanctions against Russia

At the summit in Brussels, EU leaders adopted decisions to impose further sanctions on Russia. It is about an oil embargo from this country, excluding pipelines. For the new sanctions to enter into force, however, a political decision must be transformed into a legal one. On Wednesday, work on this was carried out by the ambassadors of the member states to the EU.

– Unexpectedly Hungary made further demandscontrary to the political agreements reached at the summit. Budapest is demanding the removal of Patriarch Kirill from the sanctions lists, as well as an increase in the possibility of re-exporting Russian oil products to third countries to 3 years from the current 6 months. The European Commission and the French Presidency of the Council indicated that three years were not justified. This is a breach of the EU summit agreement. The package is currently blocked, an EU source told PAP.

On Thursday, the ambassadors of the member states to the EU will make another attempt to find an agreement on sanctions. The meeting will take place in Luxembourg.
