Ukrainian forces are defending Severodonetsk, and according to Serhiy Haydai, the head of the military administration of the region, on Sunday morning both sides controlled half of the city, which means that the Ukrainians managed to recapture part of the area.

On Friday, the governor reported that the Russians captured nearly 70 percent of Severodonetsk, but Ukrainian forces recovered about 20 percent of that portion. Hajdaj stressed, however, that although the Ukrainian forces have the possibility to completely recapture the city and it would be important for the morale of the Ukrainian side, it would not be of strategic importance, and the defense of nearby Lisiczańsk is more important.

Experts estimate that the Ukrainians may gradually withdraw from Severodonetsk in order to strengthen their positions and focus on defending Lisiczanek. Lisiczańsk itself is also under constant fire from the Russians. Hajdaj informed on Sunday that despite a very difficult situation, 98 people were evacuated from the city on Sunday. Earlier that day, he informed about 66 evacuees, including six children.

On Sunday evening, Haydaj announced that it was known from the intercepted conversations that the command of the Russian army was tasked with capturing Severodonetsk by 10 June and taking control of the important Lisichansk-Bakhmut route.

– We expect that in the near future they will throw all available reserves, all soldiers and weapons on this section (Severodonetsk and the Lisiczańsk-Bakmut route). The coming five days will be a hell of a time. The enemy will increase the frequency of heavy artillery fire several times, assessed Hajdaj on TV 1 + 1. The governor’s words were quoted in the online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda. As the politician emphasized, “The Russians will level everything with the ground, because they simply do not know any other tactics and cannot fight otherwise”.

Before the Russian aggression, the city had a population of over 100,000. residents. Currently, there are still about 12-13 thousand people there. people.

The road from Lisichansk in the Luhansk region to Bakhmut in the Donetsk region is an important transport route, enabling communication between the eastern regions and the cities of Dnieper and Zaporizhia, as well as the central and western parts of Ukraine.
