Group hunting is to take place in the forests near the border with Belarus. Activists point out that these are areas where migrants can be found. – I have not heard a more terrible and absurd idea – said Jakub Sypiański, a volunteer from Grupa Granica. Maria Złonkiewicz from the “Chlebem i Solą” initiative pointed out that refugees are people who often flee the war. “They will hide at the sound of the shots,” she added. More migrants were found by activists in a forest in the border area. The forest in which they were hiding is the area of the hunting district number 245. The one where group hunting is to take place this Sunday. And not only there.
– I have not heard a more terrible and absurd idea – says Jakub Sypiański, translator and volunteer of Grupa Granica. Maria Złonkiewicz from the “Chlebem i Solą” initiative believes that “these hunts are to be in hunting districts where we met migrants”.
Formally, it is about hunting wild boars to prevent the spread of the ASF virus, i.e. African swine fever, as every year. The authorities of the Narewka commune provided information about two hunts, which were reported by the “Orzeł” hunting club. Both districts are strictly adjacent to the prohibited areas.
Journalists of the “Polska i Świat” magazine asked Jarosław Stocki from the “Orzeł” hunting club in Narewka about this issue: – Do you think this is a good idea now? – Please come back next week.
– Why next week? After all, it can still be canceled. – Feel free to go hunting. – But … – I invite you to the hunt. – But there are people there, sir …
At that moment the man closed the door to the journalists.
“These are the people who often flee from war. They will hide at the sound of shots.”
A separate hunt was reported by the Browsk Forest Inspectorate in a region slightly further away from the Polish-Belarusian border, but the idea was quickly withdrawn. As Tomasz Michał Gałęzia from the Browsk Forest Inspectorate in Gruszki told in a statement, “in view of the broadly understood safety and the prevention of possible provocations – it was decided to abandon the hunting”.
In other areas adjacent to the zone, from the end of November, collective hunting is conducted by another hunting club – “Puszcza”. And he does not intend to suspend them for the time being. – I believe there is no threat at the moment. And that if we meet people, or in short: refugees, we will stop this hunt at this moment – argues Marek Glad from the hunting club “Puszcza” in Białowieża. When asked what would happen when these people, for example, hear gunshots, he replied, “I don’t know what will happen.” Neither do you know. “
According to Maria Złonkiewicz, “this is an absolutely real threat that some of the migrants who are hiding here in the forests will be shot.” – Please also take into account that these are people who often flee from war, who will hide at the sound of shots and will not know what is happening – she added. According to unofficial information, the head of Narewka has already talked to hunters from the “Orzel” circle about the cancellation of the hunting and it will soon be decided on this matter.
