What is foot and mouth disease: It is an infectious and contagious disease of cloven-hoofed animals. “It is the most sensitive to infection cattle, then pigs, sheep and goats” – indicates Chief Veterinary Inspectorate. “The country where FMD occurs is exposed to very large economic losses in the meat industry and breeding. These losses are caused by the deaths of animals of sensitive species, costs elimination of disease outbreaks and payment of compensation, as well as suspension of trade and export of animals of sensitive species, meat of these animals and products obtained from these animals,” we read. Foot and mouth disease in humans is not fatal and is mild. Infection may occur as a result of contact with a sick animal or after eating meat, milk and unpasteurized dairy products.
