Poznań and Kalisz are the cities where the least amount of rain fell last year. There has been a problem with steppeification throughout Greater Poland for a long time. How can this situation be improved? Experts talk about it on TVN24.

Data published by the Central Statistical Office at the end of November this year show that last year the lowest rainfall was recorded in Poznań – 415 liters of water per square meter. It was therefore the driest Polish city in 2022. He took second place Kalisz, where 437 l/sq m fell. Third place went to Zielona Góra – 442 l/sq m.

– In Greater Poland and elsewhere, as experts say, we have a problem with steppe development – said reporter Łukasz Wójcik on Saturday on TVN24.

The highest rainfall was recorded in the mountains. 989 l/sq m fell on Śnieżka. A lot of rain also fell in Włodawa – 649 l/sq m, in Suwałki – 633 l/sq m, as well as in Białystok – 603 l/sq m

“We can compare rainfall a bit to income at home”

Why is it the driest in Greater Poland and the surrounding area? – If we look at Poland, we record high rainfall at the seaside, because the source is obviously the sea, or in the mountains – said Bogdan Chojnicki, a climatologist from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań. He explained that large amounts of rainfall in mountainous areas result from their shape. – Both Poznań and Kalisz lie exactly between these two zones, where we observe higher rainfall. In other words, there will naturally be less rainfall here, said the climatologist.

How to improve the situation

Chojnicki noted that even with a small amount of rainfall, the situation can be improved.

– We can compare rainfall a bit to income at home. It is not necessary to have high income, but the question remains how we manage this income, he said.

According to experts, retention reservoirs in cities and sowing flower meadows are a chance to effectively improve the situation.

During the renovation of the Old Market Square in Poznań, huge pipes with a diameter of three meters appeared, which were used to build retention tanks under the market square. As the TVN24 reporter reminded us, one of them will hold 600 cubic meters of water and the main task of this tank will be to relieve the catchments that receive rainwater, so that it does not flood the basements of tenement houses, but a large part of it will be water that will be used to supply municipal water. plants – he said.

In July this year, a retention reservoir in Tulce near Poznań was opened. It covers an area of 22 hectares and has a capacity of 242,000 liters. A key investment from the retention perspective has been pending for over 20 years – the construction of a reservoir in the south of Greater Poland (Wielowieś Klasztorna) with an area of two thousand hectares.

What else can you do to stop water? – Maybe instead of a beautifully trimmed, Anglo-Saxon lawn that we will enjoy, it is worth sowing a flower meadow – said Agnieszka Veljkovic from WWF

– Such a meadow is mown less often, twice a season. In addition, it attracts pollinators, so we have a second benefit because we create a place for pollinators, and thirdly, the April meadow can retain water and allows us to maintain constant moisture in the soil – she explained.

Unfortunately, the disastrous results of Poznań and Kalisz are not accidental. Over the last 50 years, these two cities in Greater Poland have been at the end of the list of cities with the highest rainfall.

Climate Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska said that, first of all, the natural retention of rivers must be increased. – This is the basic, key challenge – the restoration of Polish rivers – she said.
