Heavy rain flooded the Greek city of Thessaloniki on Friday night into Saturday. In the suburbs, the river burst its banks, flooding houses and yards. As reported by local media, the firefighters of Thessaloniki intervened as many as 300 times by Saturday morning.

It passed over Thessaloniki in Greece on Friday night storm. The phenomenon was accompanied by heavy rain, which in some places caused severe flooding.

“A huge wave is coming”

By 8am on Saturday, Thessaloniki’s firefighters had received 300 calls for help due to flooding in the northern part of the city. The most difficult situation was in the town of Polichni on the outskirts of the city, where the river overflowed its banks, flooding houses and yards. Many properties were covered with a layer of mud.

“About 4.30 we heard a bang,” said one local resident. – I went out on the balcony and saw that a huge wave was coming, but it was moving quite slowly. We moved the cars so they wouldn’t be swept away by the river.

Water also flooded streets and tunnels in the Evosmos region on the outskirts of Thessaloniki. Local media reported that some households experienced power outages.

The Greek National Meteorological Service warned on Saturday that rain and thunderstorms with hail would accompany residents until at least evening.
