Ornitologists from Florida are devastated by the death of two young American white -tailed eagles. Birds probably ate an animal infected with bird flu. The young did not even have to receive names.

American white -tailed eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), although in the red book of endangered species they appear as “animals of the slightest care”, are protected. At the end of December 2024, US President Joe Biden officially recognized this genre as a national symbol of the United States.

Experts dealing with nature and bird fans are terrified of the death of two young people who have gone after infection with a bird flu virus.

E-24 and E-25

Birds hatched around the city of Fort Myers in the southwest Florida. Thousands of people watched their lives thanks to the online broadcast. The white-tailed earth has not yet received names, they were marked only as E-24 and E-25.

On Thursday, the veterinarians confirmed that the cause of the death of young white -tailed eagles was bird flu. The animals were infected with the H5N1 strain, which can be very dangerous not only for birds, but also people. According to the researchers, the young got sick after their father brought to the nest of an infected bird. Four days after the incident were already dead.

– For 13 years, since we monitor white -tailed eagles, we have never had such a situation – said Jessica Comolli, director of research and medicine at the Clinic of Rehabilitation of Wild Animals in Florida.

Very high mortality

American ornithologists are starting to fear the virus. In January, a fatal case of the same strain was also recorded in Louisiana.

– There are reports in which it was found that cases of incidence among prey birds in which clinical symptoms develop, mortality is 90-100 percent, so this is a very, very contagious disease – added Comolli.
