At least 32 people have lost their lives in tornadoes that swept through several US states on Saturday, according to the latest data. The residents themselves engaged in removing the consequences of the weather – they clean up the rubble and prepare food. US President Joe Biden promised help to those affected by the weather.

The tragic balance sheet rose storm and tornadoes across the southern and midwestern United States on Saturday. At least 32 people were killed, officials said.

The Memphis Police Department said at least two children were among the dozen fatalities in Tennessee. Strong gusts of wind knocked down trees on several homes. In Indiana, the weather took the lives of two people. Their bodies were found near a campground in McCormick’s Creek State Park.

The death toll also came from the states of Arkansas, Illinois, Delaware, Mississippi and Alabama. Dozens of people were injured and many buildings damaged or destroyed.

Meals for the injured

In the first of these states, the losses are also very serious. In Little Rock, the capital of Arkansas, volunteers gather at churches and charities and organize food drives. Meals will be distributed to the most affected residents.

According to Serge Krikorian, from one of the local catering companies, the team works non-stop to prepare food for evacuated people.

– We started going out this morning. We made 300 breakfasts and then we made 1,800 hot dog meals for everyone. Now we are preparing dinner, which is 900 chicken sandwiches – he said.

Government support

US President Joe Biden was concerned about this “major catastrophe”. In a statement released on Sunday, he said he and his wife were praying for everyone affected by the weekend’s storms. He promised that those affected would receive “help for immediate needs and long-term recovery” from the government.

“We know that families across America are mourning the loss of loved ones, desperately waiting to hear about others who are fighting for their lives, and searching through the rubble of their homes and businesses,” he said.

Not very optimistic forecasts

In some tornado-affected regions, the weather continues to be severe. The National Storm Prediction Center on Sunday warned of severe weather across northern and northeastern Texas. The reports said very large hail, significant wind gusts and a “strong tornado or two”.

Due to the weather – heavy rain, hail and gusty winds – lots of flights from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport were delayed.

In the following days, dynamic weather conditions are likely to occur in much of the Midwest.
