The state police from Alaska reported that the accident occurred on Thursday. The off-road car, which was driven by five employees employed in the mining company, fell into the Susitna River in the area of ​​the Matanuska-Susitna district. Employees tried to defeat the frozen liquid, but the ice broke under the weight of the vehicle.
Three people got out of the water
Policemen said that three people got out of the water, but two men could not be located. According to officers, they probably fell under the ice and were kidnapped by the river current. The rescued called for help. A police helicopter and a rescue aircraft belonging to the state authorities arrived. Three people who got out of water safely did not need medical help.
The search for two men lasted several days. On Saturday evening, the police recognized them as the dead.
Extremely warm winter
Tess Williams, a police spokeswoman, said that most of the state struggles with an extremely warm winter. In the south -center Alaska “snow and ice conditions are not what many residents expect at the beginning of March,” she said.
– Particular care should be taken during field activity, especially in mountain areas susceptible to avalanches and when crossing ice – said the spokeswoman.
