The allegations of damage to property, battery with the use of a dangerous tool and disruption of the mass event were heard by three men who, according to the investigators’ findings, took part in the riots at the Lechia Gdańsk stadium on Thursday evening. By a court decision, they were arrested for three months. According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspects will not plead guilty.
Thursday’s match of the 1st round of the conference League football qualifying round between Lechia Gdańsk and the Macedonian Pandev Academy was interrupted at the eighth minute because of riots in the stands. The referee decided to send the players back to the dressing room when there were clashes between hooligans on the stand occupied by the hosts’ supporters. The brawl took place before the match in the Przystadionowy club, and then the brawl began in the stands of the Gdańsk stadium. The break in the match between Lechia Gdańsk and Akademia Pandev lasted about 40 minutes. The meeting ended with the score 4: 1 for Lechia.
As the Gdańsk police said in a statement, Lechia fans and security clashed in the fight.
Charges and arrest for three men
The prosecutor charged three men who disrupted Lechia Gdańsk’s Thursday match with the Pandev Academy. On Saturday, the court imposed pre-trial detention on the 20-, 25- and 28-year-old.
– The suspects were charged with damaging the equipment of the pub located in the stadium and causing losses of not less than PLN 100,000 – said the inspector. Magdalena Ciska from the Gdańsk police. And she added that another allegation concerns the crime of beating with a dangerous tool in the form of a stick and disrupting the course of a mass event and causing the escape of people staying there, and the referee breaking the match.
– The crimes committed by the men were of a hooligan nature, which will have an impact on increasing the sentence imposed on the suspects – the press officer assessed. Earlier, on Friday, she announced: – The next arrests in the case are only a matter of time.
A spokesman for the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk, prosecutor Grażyna Wawryniuk in an interview with PAP said that the men did not plead guilty during Saturday’s hearing and refused to provide explanations. Participation in a beating with the use of a dangerous tool is punishable by up to 8 years imprisonment. The crime of damage to property is punishable by imprisonment of up to 5 years. The crime of disrupting a mass event is punishable by up to 2 years’ imprisonment.
