Winter is a difficult time for many people, especially those who do not have a permanent place of residence. Sometimes help comes almost at the last minute, as in the case of a 50-year-old who slept on a thin mattress in the basement of the vacancy. He was hospitalized.

During the inspection of abandoned buildings in the Łosice commune, they found a 50-year-old man who was exhausted and exposed to hypothermia. He lay in the basement of the vacancy on a thin mattress.

Winter, especially on frosty days, is a period especially dangerous for people in the crisis of homelessness, but also old, lonely and intoxicated. Every time we see someone who is exposed to cooling the body, let's not be indifferent and let us alarm the police. To save someone's life, one phone call is enough to emergency number 112.

Elderly and lonely people require special attention

– Winter is a time when policemen during patrols pay special attention to places where they can look for shelter and sleep people in the crisis of homelessness. These are usually vacancies, allotments, gazebos. Every year we monitor the situation of these people, we offer help to anyone who needs it. We always suggest transport to centers where it is warm and where they can eat a warm meal, as well as sleep in normal conditions – says Edyta Adamus from the capital's police. – Elderly, lonely, awkward or infirm people also require special attention, which can be exposed to the effects of low temperatures, and adverse weather conditions may prove to be an insurmountable barrier for them. It is worth making sure that they do not need help in everyday activities, such as shopping. We can also notify the social assistance center about the difficult situation of a neighbor or friend – he adds.

The myth of alcohol to warm up

The police also remind you that one of the most common and at the same time the most wrong myths is that alcohol is the best to warm up.

– That's not true. In fact, the drinking person feels warm for a moment, but in a moment his body is even more exposed to chilling. Going out, being under the influence of alcohol. All you need is a moment of inattention, slippery, uneven surface and you can stumble, overturn and have no strength to get up. Then it is not difficult for the tragedy. Therefore, do not pass by people after alcohol during severe frosts. A drunk man loses heat much faster – reminds Edyta Adamus.
