Hundreds of people were stuck for several hours at a train station near Paris with broken air conditioning, when the temperature outside reached 40 degrees Celsius, media reports. Some passengers smashed windows.

The Paris-Amsterdam lineup departed from Paris on Tuesday at around 6:30 p.m. with an hour delay due to a breakdown, but shortly thereafter it stopped at the Saint-Denis station near Paris and did not leave it for more than 3.5 hours. According to the Dutch portal NOS, the air conditioning broke down shortly after the train left Paris. It carried over 600 passengers and 10 crew members.

– We were not allowed to open the door because the train was between two (other) tracks – described a Belgian passenger Tom Van Heymbeeck, quoted by the portal.

Passengers broke windows

As he said, desperate passengers in some carriages broke windows in order to provide themselves with relatively fresh air.

– People from the platforms threw us bottles of water so that we could drink something, we ran out of drinks after an hour – said the Belgian.

Passengers were evacuated from the train around 11 PM. Some passengers, however, spent the night on the train because they had no way of reaching their destination, including Amsterdam and Brussels.

“Passengers will be compensated,” assured the carrier’s spokesman, Thalys, who apologized for the incident.
