Children and youth mental health roundtable with activists, experts, politicians and young people themselves. On Thursday, the meeting in the Senate resulted in a list of specific recommendations, because the idea was for adults to ask young people what they can do for them and how to help them.

The discussion on the mental health of children and adolescents moved to the Senate on Thursday. – There is too much science, that is the first thing, but addictions are another important issue – said Aleksandra Giska from the Precedens Association. – High school finished my psyche. I couldn’t stand the pressure, I couldn’t stand sitting for several hours – confessed Paweł Mrozek from Akcja Uczniowska.

At Wiejska Street, students, specialists, activists, parents and politicians joined forces. – We can sit at the same table with young people and ask: hey, what can we, adults, do for you – said Martyna Wojciechowska, president of the UNAWEZA Foundation.

As experts point out, not only a parent can help a child, but also a friend. – If he says: “I want to help you because something is bothering me, I will be happy to listen to you”, it already helps – emphasizes Prof. Agnieszka Gmitrowicz, vice-president of the Polish Suicidological Society.

During the meeting, the young people were also encouraged not to be afraid to ask for help. – Young people go to a teacher as a punishment, they go to a psychologist as a punishment, so we, adults, let’s break the spell – said Danuta Sowińska, a suicidologist.

There is still a lot of work to be done when it comes to psychologists in schools. – So that there are not too few of them, so that the hours in which they work are extended – says Krzysztof Obrębski, educator, deputy director of the School Complex No. 31 in Warsaw. – If we do not take care of prevention and also changes in education, the activities in the health care system will not be fully effective – says Dr. Aleksandra Lewandowska, national consultant in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry.

Demands after the discussion in the Senate

During the debate, the Minister of Education, Barbara Nowacka, recalled that she had already appointed a representative for students’ mental health, who cooperates with the Ministry of Health. – My dream is that on September 1, we will be able to feel a real change in the well-being of young people at school – said the minister.

After a discussion in the Senate, a pact was signed, which included a number of recommendations – from abolishing bells to training staff in providing psychological first aid. – Mental health is the most important thing for us, young people – emphasized Paweł Mrozek from Akcja Uczniowska.

Support that each of us can join is also important. The “Health in Your Head” campaign is implemented from the funds transferred to the TVN Foundation last year, including one and a half percent of tax. – We create offices for psychologists and psychiatrists in hospitals throughout Poland – says Ewa Zatorska from the TVN Foundation.

This year, the TVN Foundation will use the tax deduction money for the treatment of sick children and elderly people and for the renovation of hospitals.
