Among the creators of this silent appeal are the greatest voices of the British music industry: Kate Bush, Elton John, Ed Sheeran and Sting. “There is neither moral nor economic justification for the theft of our copyright. They will collect their entire industry and deprive future generations of a chance for creative development,” we read in the appeal.

The creators oppose planned changes in the copyright, which has been in force in the islands for 300 years. The new regulations are to allow technology companies to train artificial intelligence models on their work without the consent of the artists. The project is pushed by the Starmer government, which hopes to make Great Britain the world leader in new technologies, but you can only hear about threats now.

– We have united and we are absolutely convinced that we must protect the values ​​of copyright. Copyright protects our work, but also enable us to create new music and provide great content for the music industry. It is absolutely outrageous that the top -shelf corporations will profit from our work before we publish it – says Thomas Hewitt Jones, composer and music producer.

The rate is huge. The British phonographic industry is billions of pounds of revenues for the economy and millions of jobs. Not only musicians, but also producers and publishers are afraid that the opening of archives for artificial intelligence will weaken the position of creators.

– It is the copyright that is considered a golden standard around the world that allows us to be leading experts in our work and work. That is why it makes no sense, especially when we all focus on economic growth, give our greatest treasures without permission, without remuneration, for free – notes Jo Twist, head of British Phonographic Industry.

The legendary artists took the floor among the protesters. Paul McCartney, the already mentioned Elton John or Dua Lipa, signed in the open letter to the government.

In turn, guitarist Queen Brian May calls for reflection before it is too late. “I support this campaign, which is to make society aware of what loses. I hope that we will be able to run the brake, because if not, no one can afford to create music” – emphasizes the artist.

The creators ask: if AI needs data, why should they come from artists' achievements without their consent and salary?

– If I copied the musical work of a living composer, your, anyone, without asking, it would be a violation of copyright. It can be argued that to some extent permission to use is used for academic purposes, but massive, systematic extraction of data from entire catalogs, without any compensation, cannot be justified – notes Thomas Hewitt Jones.
