In the hospital in SÅ‚upsk it started with nurses filing complaints against the head of the hospital, whose behavior towards them was unacceptable. A special commission confirmed some of the allegations, but the head of the hospital himself had previously left the job. Now all the nurses want to resign, because they claim that they are being persecuted by the hospital management in retaliation.
– All nurses are leaving, including doctors – informs Monika Paprocka, a nurse at the Provincial Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
Nurses from the surgical ward of the hospital in SÅ‚upsk decided to talk to the media. As they say, out of helplessness.
– We are banging our heads against the wall because we have no one to turn to for help – says anonymously one of the nurses at the Provincial Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
Complaints and departure of the head of the department
To understand the essence of the conflict, we need to go back to February. At that time, anonymous letters were sent to the voivodeship marshal’s desk, informing about the improper behavior of the then head of the hospital.
– I personally witnessed a scene in which he looked into his friend's underwear and commented out loud that “today it's lace” – says anonymously one of the doctors from the Provincial Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
The Marshal's Commission began its work, but before it was completed the head physician himself left the hospital.
The wife of the former head of the hospital is on the board of the facility, and the nurses claim that they are now the target of retaliation. – We perceive it as a kind of revenge against us, because how dared the nurses to speak out – says one of the nurses from the Voivodeship Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
According to nurses, these activities include persistent checks. – How things are arranged in our cabinets, how we work, how many of us are in the ward – lists Antonina Smolarz, a nurse at the Voivodeship Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
They claim that they work under enormous pressure and stress. – Most of us take sedatives. We are undergoing psychiatric therapy. We do not sleep at night, we do not eat – says Monika Paprocka.
Ms. Monika was disciplinarily transferred to another ward. She was told it was for mobbing. She resigned. All the nurses we talked to want to resign. Some are on sick leave. But the hospital is reassuring.
– Continuity of staffing is ensured, and patient care is also provided – says Anna Mogielnicka, acting ward nurse at the Provincial Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
Doctors are handing in their notices
However, eight doctors from the surgical department have already resigned. They claim that they are unable to ensure patient safety due to the lack of nurses.
– In white gloves, finish them off mentally. The work is very hard and reducing the number of nurses during work is a nightmare – comments an anonymous doctor from the Provincial Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk. – You can't replace a car mechanic with a ship mechanic. This is a surgical ward, where patients are often in serious condition and you have to know how to take care of them – echoes another doctor from the Provincial Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
The Marshal's Office claims that the new head of the department and the ward nurse must be trusted. – Let's give the new team, the new managers, time to arrange this work according to their own vision – appeals Leszek Bonna, vice-marshal of the Pomeranian Voivodeship.
The doctors' notices are three months. – I am open to talks and I think that the situation may still change in the mentality and thinking of our doctors – says Professor Jacek ZieliÅ„ski, coordinator of the Surgery Department of the Voivodeship Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
Nurses are also waiting for talks. – I hope that the institutions that supervise the hospital's work will consider why this is happening and offer some help – comments one of the nurses from the Voivodeship Specialist Hospital in SÅ‚upsk.
