Two tourists from Spain, a mother and her daughter, died and the other family members, the deceased's husband and her son, were seriously injured in northern Tanzania when they tried to drive a car onto the rim of the Ngorongoro volcano. The car rolled to the bottom of the crater, local media reported.
Ngorongoro is an extinct volcano with an area of about 260 square kilometers with a salt lake in the middle. It is a rugged, difficult terrain to travel by car, especially its rocky edges rising to more than 600 meters.
The accident happened on Sunday. An eyewitness, quoted by Tanzanian media, reported that the vehicle the Spaniards were traveling in had just found itself in difficult terrain, and the driver “apparently did not have enough experience to drive in such conditions.” The vehicle stopped on a rocky slope, and after a moment rolled from a great height to the bottom of the crater.
Mother and daughter died
The family involved in the accident came from Bizkaia, Basque region of Spain. A 58-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, while her 18-year-old daughter died in hospital. The tourist's 58-year-old husband and her 16-year-old son suffered serious injuries to various parts of their bodies, The Citizien reported.
According to Elirehema Doriye, director of Ngorongoro National Park, it was the first fatal accident in its history.
Ngorongoro is famous for its rich fauna and flora. Tourists are guaranteed to see the so-called Big Five, i.e. elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino. It is also a heavily guarded park and divided by clearly marked trails with information boards making travel easier.
