Water from municipal swimming pools is used to clean Warsaw streets. It is not only indoor pools that are taking part in the campaign. In September, water will also be taken from outdoor pools that are closing after the season.
After the holidays, the Moczydło Water Park is the first to return to service.
– This is the fifth year of pro-ecological activities, which are possible thanks to the cooperation of many partners. The project involves sports centers from all over Warsaw, firefighters from the Wesoła Volunteer Fire Department, who support us with specialist equipment, and companies that work on our behalf. This is a model example of how, when carrying out various tasks, we can unite in caring for the environment – says Robert Szymański, director of the City Cleaning Authority, quoted in the release.
One pool is an average of three nights of work
During this year's summer holidays, Warsaw swimming pools have already transferred 1.5 million liters of water. The campaign is carried out during technical breaks, when it is necessary to empty the pools. The water is pumped into dishwashers using equipment provided by firefighters from the Wesoła Volunteer Fire Department. They are the first at the pool on the day of collection. They install pumps, connect hoses and coordinate technical issues. Refueling takes about 20 minutes, and one night a dozen or so vehicles leave the swimming pool area and immediately start washing the roadway. Due to the huge capacity of the pools, their emptying is spread over an average of three nights. The activities are adapted to weather conditions. In unfavorable weather, during a storm or heavy rain, the campaign is canceled.
“The water used to wash the roadway is taken when the disinfection agents have already evaporated – therefore it is safe for the environment, people and the washed surfaces,” emphasize city officials.
